Abstract | The Eurobarometer has the following main focus content areas: 1. satisfaction of the Europeans, 2. future concerns, 3. attitudes to Europe and the community, 4. attitudes to the USA and other countries, 5. judgement on the energy situation, 6. political attitudes and 7. miscellaneous. Topics: 1: general contentment with life and satisfaction with the functioning of democracy in the country. 2: concerns for the future; expected development of the situation in the job market. 3: attitude to unification of Western Europe; interest in the problems of the European Community; assumed significance of problems of the EC for the future of the country and its citizens; self-classification of extent to which informed about the problems of the EC and sources of information used; judgement on the harmony of the EC countries among themselves; attitude to membership of the country in the EC; preference for more national responsibilities or for a European Government; European citizenship; self-assessment of national pride. 4: attitude to US Americans as well as Russians, Japanese and Chinese; trust in the USA coping with world problems; attitude to foreign policy and security policy oriented on the USA; judgement on securing of peace through Soviet and American policies; self-assessment of pro- or anti-American stand. 5: classification of the seriousness of current energy problems; expected development of energy problems in the future; preferred concepts for provision of energy; measures to save energy personally undertaken; areas for further energy savings; attitude to atomic energy (scale) as well as the necessity of atomic energy for provision of electricity; assessment of the probability of a nuclear power plant explosion; most important dangers of a nuclear power plant; assumed reasons (human or technical failure) for nuclear power plant accidents; judgement on the quality of information in the individual media; distance to the closest nuclear power plant; planned power plant in the vicinity; judgement on the risk of selected technical facilities. 6: most important national goals as well as most important spiritual goals (scales); expected social and political changes for the future; attitude to the welfare state (scale); party sympathy; party preference (Sunday question); self-assessment on a left-right continuum; political interest; assessment of possibilities to exert political influence; attitude to the political system, nature protection associations, the ecology movement, the anti-atom movement as well as the peace movement; self-assessment of political opinion leadership; preferred distribution of ability and assignment of selected political problems to the municipalities, the Federal Government or the European Community. 7: company size, religiousness; preferred size of place of residence. Interviewer rating: distance to closest nuclear power plant. The following supplemental questions were posed to young people between the ages of 14 to 25 years: appropriate pay; work satisfaction and perceived prospects of promotion; desired education received; expected training qualification; living with parents or with a partner; financial situation; satisfaction with the areas of life; personal area of interest. The following questions were posed to unemployed young people: length of search for work, type of financial support, major reason for unemployment. Demography: age; sex; marital status; occupational position; company size; household income; household size; household composition; respondent is head of household; characteristics of head of household; party preference (Sunday question); degree of urbanization; state. |
