AbstractThe main focus of Eurobarometer 24 are questions on the European Community. Topics: assessment of personal prospects for the future in the next year; expected company conflicts (strikes) and international conflicts in the next year; perceived danger of war; assessment of the general as well as one´s own economic situation; contentment with life; satisfaction with democracy in the country; personal opinion leadership; postmaterialism index; familiarity of the EUREKA project; frequency of political discussions with friends; trust in national government; national pride; feeling of being a citizen of Europe; willingness to go to war for one´s own country; attitude to planned EC-wide uniform signs at border-crossings; familiarity and evaluation of the European Parliament; significance of the European Parliament for personal life; attitude to an increase in importance of the European Parliament; preference for national or European decision-making responsibility in selected political questions; attitude to majority decisions in EC committees; preference for the term European Community or Common Market; benefit of EC membership for one´s own country; regret of a failure of the EC; attitude to mutual aid for member countries with economic difficulties; personal willingness to make sacrifices for this through increased tax payments; attitude to unification of Western Europe and a united Europe; estimate of time interval until a political unification will be completed; self-assessment on a left-right continuum; attitude to social changes; importance of God (scale); feeling of happiness; approval of import restrictions to secure jobs in the country; attitude to import duty on foods to protect domestic agriculture; attitude to the USA and assessment of the relations between one´s own country and the United States; assumed attitude of the USA to European unification; assessment of the usefulness of economic relations of one´s own country to the USA and Japan; party allegiance; party preference.   •  EB - Standard and Special Eurobarometer
    Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
