AbstractAttitudes towards the euro four years after its introduction. Topics: ongoing difficulties in handling the euro; currency used for counting or calculating when doing common or exceptional purchases; usefulness of continued dual price displays; difficulty to distinguish and handle euro bank notes and specific coins; opinion about the number of existing coins and which euro coin denominations should be removed; attitude towards a 1-euro bank note; personal spending behaviour since the introduction of the euro: spend more due to difficulty realizing how much one is spending, spend less due to fear of spending too much; assessment of the impact of the introduction on the prices in the own country; obligation to pay supplementary fees for the use of bank debit card in another country of the euro zone; attitude towards the following statements on the euro: is already an international currency like dollar or yen, reduced price differences between euro zone countries; travels outside the euro zone in 2003; currency taken on the trip: euros, dollar, other currency; impact of the adoption of the euro for the own country; satisfaction with the euro; changes in feeling European due to the euro; assessment of the historical significance of the introduction of the euro for the EU; value of the euro against the dollar; concern about the value of the euro against the dollar; interest in current economic news of the own country; assessment of the economic situation in the own country compared to other European countries; state of national budget in 2002: surplus, deficit, balance; awareness of the ´Stability and Growth Pact´; attitude towards selected statements on the ´Stability and Growth Pact´: countries should be free not to respect the Pact in difficult economic periods, makes the euro a stable and strong currency, unequal application of economic sanctions against countries that do not respect the ´Stability and Growth Pact´; own country respects the ´Stability and Growth Pact´. Demography: sex; age; age at end of education; occupation; professional position; region; type of community. Additionally coded was: country; interviewer ID; weighting factor.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
