2015-12-21x049, x049aNotification: Researchers who want to use the ‘size of town’ variable for analyses are kindly asked to carefully check the results due to some inconsistencies we found in some surveys. They may be caused by deviating questions used in a country, by the source of the information (respondent, interviewer, field work institute), or the way of coding the variable (post-coded, further checked and processed, etc.).
2011-10-31a124_01-a124_28Notification - wave 2008: For several countries a deviation in coding the battery´s items was detected. Some countries seem to have asked item by item while others asked the battery as a block.
2012-5-22s017a weightNotification - wave 2008: Both weights are computed on basis of age and gender. Value ‘0’ implies that information on respondent’s gender or year of birth was missing in the data or outside the range. When applying weights, these cases/records are excluded from analysis, but do remain in the data file.
2011-12-30s022Notification - wave 1990: Data included in Longitudinal File for EVS 1990 corresponds to information on fieldwork period as in the study description. Correct data is not yet available in the updated 1990 Integrated Data Set v.3.0.0.
2011-12-30s023Notification - wave 1990: Data included in Longitudinal File for EVS 1990 corresponds to information on fieldwork period as in the study description. Correct data not yet available in the updated 1990 Integrated Data Set v.3.0.0.
2011-12-30x011Notification - wave 1981: Variable x011 ‘How many children do you have - deceased children included’: value 0 ‘No children’ has been generated for EVS 1981 on basis of variable x011a (have you had any children (Q264_1) 1 ‘yes’, 2 ‘no’).

      2015-10-30 doi:10.4232/1.12253
      Changes in this version
2015-12-21DatasetNot all changes from version 2.0.0 to version 3.0.0 are included in the list below. For further changes, please see Variable Report in section "Data and Documents".--
2015-12-21DatasetIn order to prevent the identification of single respondents, specific information of the EVS 2008 surveys is aggregated into coarse categories providing users with less detailed information on respondent´s residence (region of interview, size of town) and occupation (ISCO-variables). For more detailed information, see the variable report and "Further remarks" of the study description. 2015-10-30
2015-12-21DatasetThe Azerbaijanian survey of EVS wave 2008 is dropped from the current version of the EVS LdF due to concerns about the data quality. For evaluation, the data and documentation of the national dataset (Azerbaijan, ZA4785) can be downloaded from the GESIS data catalogue. Users who want to analyse the data are kindly asked to carefully check socio-demographic distributions (e.g. age, education, and marital status) indicating problems regarding sample design and fieldwork, respectively.2015-10-30
2015-12-21DatasetIn order to ease the construction of the Integrated Values Surveys data file, the new versions of the longitudinal data files released by WVS (v.20150418) and EVS (V3.0.0, 2015-10-30) apply the same variable structure and a common dictionary. Variables used only in WVS surveys are coded -4 not asked in EVS LdF, and vice versa, variables only used in EVS surveys are coded -4 not asked in WVS LdF. For more information, see Variable Report in section "Data and Documents".2015-10-30
2015-12-21x048a_n1, x048b_n2, x048c_n3Related to regional information on NUTS 1, NUTS 2, and NUTS 3 level: Additionally to the variables applying an EVS specific coding frame (numeric NUTS variables), six new variables are included now applying the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (in string format). The new NUTS variables for region where interview was conducted x048a_n1, x048b_n2, and x048c_n3 and for region at age 14 x048e_n1, x048f_n2, and x048g_n3 correspond to the EVS specific NUTS variables. For more information see Variable Report in section "Data and Documents".2015-10-30
2015-12-21s036New flag variable (S036) marking duplicate records as ‘1 suspicious’ added to dataset. Duplicate records are defined in terms of identity of respondents’ answers to all (almost all) questionnaire items, i.e. excluding technical and constructed variables, or variables that are manipulated/recoded during data processing. Data users are alerted to a closer inspection of the consequences of record duplication in view of their concrete research context. Further information on duplicate cases is given in the Variable Report in section "Data and Documents".
Detailed data on detected duplicate records is available here.

      Version 2.0.02011-12-30 doi:10.4232/1.11005
      Changes in this version
      2011-12-15y002Changed for waves 1981/1990:
Variable y002 ‘post-materialist index 4-item’ was constructed differently than in the previous Longitudinal Data File version (1.0.0). If a person chose twice the same materialistic (1/1 or 3/3) or post-materialistic (2/2 or 4/4) aim, he/she was coded as materialistic or post-materialistic person. To exclude these cases of equal mentions from analysis use the flag variable e003_f for filtering. In earlier versions of the Longitudinal Data File these persons were coded as 2 ’mixed’.
      2011-12-30
      2011-12-15e045Corrected for wave 1999:
Variable e045 ‘major changes in life cautious vs. act boldly’: For Luxembourg original question is not comparable to the English Master Questionnaire due to deviation in answer categories. NotesThe EVS LdF is offered in two different versions: • The EVS Longitudinal Data File 1981-2008, ZA4804 contains de facto anonymised data, i.e. specific information of the EVS 2008 surveys is aggregated into coarse categories providing less detailed information on respondent’s residence and occupation. It is provided for direct download through the GESIS data catalogue free of charge after registration. • The EVS Longitudinal Data File 1981-2008 (Restricted Use File), ZA5174 contains complete information, i.e. also data that could not be included in the EVS LdF ZA4804 because of data protection concerns. Due to the sensitive nature of the data, its usage is subject to specific contractual regulations. The contract allowing for off-site access can be downloaded in section ‘Data and Documentation’ of the study description.

      • The EVS Bibliography lists all kinds of publications using EVS data, based on national and cross-national analysis. The bibliography is an easy way to find relevant publications in the field of value studies. Moreover, some enhanced publications with information on the datasets, variables, and syntax codes of the concepts used are available. The EVS Bibliography can be found here.

      • European Values Study (EVS)
The European Values Study 1981-2008 is a large-scale, cross-national and longitudinal survey research program carried out under the responsibility of the European Values Study Foundation. The four EVS waves cover a broad range of topics including the main domains of life: work and leisure time, family and sexuality, religion, politics and ethics. The EVS holding includes integrated datasets on every EVS wave and additionally for the waves 1999 and 2008 the national datasets. The EVS Longitudinal Data File 1981-2008 is based on the four waves and can be easily merged with the World Values Survey 1981-2014 to an Integrated Values Surveys 1981-2014 Data File.
