AbstractAttitudes of European businesses towards eco-innovation. Topics: percentage of material cost in relation to company’s total cost; development of material cost in the last five years; expected development of material cost in the coming five to ten years; regions of material origin; measures to reduce material cost in the last five years; share of innovation investments related to eco-innovation in the last five years; introduction in the last two years, of new or significantly improved eco-innovative: products or services to the market, production processes, organisational methods; reduction of material use per unit output in the last two years; importance of selected obstacles to eco-innovation: lack of funds within enterprise, lack of external financing, uncertain return on investment, lack of personnel and technological capabilities within enterprise, limited access to external information and knowledge, lack of suitable business partners, lack of collaboration with universities and research institutes, uncertain demand from the market, reduction of material use is no innovation priority, reduction of energy use is no innovation priority, technological lock-ins in economy, market domination by established enterprises, missing incentives for eco-innovation, insufficient access to subsidies and fiscal incentives; importance of each of the following motivations for eco-innovation: technological and management capabilities within enterprise, secure or increase existing market share, high material price, limited access to materials, expected future material scarcity, collaboration with universities and research institutes, good access to external information and knowledge, good business partners, high energy price, expected future increase in energy price, existing regulations and standards, expected future regulations and standards, access to subsidies and fiscal incentives, increasing market demand for green products. Demography: information about the company: number of employees; annual turnover; development of turnover in the last two years; main activity of the company. Additionally coded was: interview ID; interviewer ID; language of the interview; country; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; call history; weighting factor.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
