AbstractAttitudes towards the European Union. Topics: attitude towards selected statements on European integration (guarantees peace on the continent, makes France stronger against the rest of the world, contributes to France’s prosperity); preference for measures being taken against the economic crisis on national or on EU level; management of the economic crisis to date as joint action of the European countries or following national interests; globalisation as an opportunity or a threat for European citizens; approval of the following statements: politicians should tell people more about the European Union, the media should tell people more about the European Union; interest in the next European elections; intention to vote in the next European elections; knowledge about the future role of the voters in choosing the president of the European Commission; increased or decreased willingness to vote in the 2014 European elections due to this knowledge; televised debate between the candidates for the position of the president of the European Commission would encourage to vote; preference for the electoral campaign to focus on national or on European issues; preference for a more political or economic orientation of the EU in 2020; expectations regarding the EU in 2020 (decisions on the basis of a qualified majority and not unanimously, true European economic government, harmonization of social policies and taxation, more activities in education, training and research, coordination of migration policies, higher priority to fighting climate change); left-right self-placement. Demography: age; sex; nationality; age at end of education; occupation; region; type of community; household composition and household size. Additionally coded was: type of phone line for interview; contactability by phone.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
