European integration: general life satisfaction; satisfaction with democracy; opinion leadership; frequency of political discussions; postmaterialism; trust in the Americans and Russians; ability of the Soviet Union and the United States to solve problems in world politics; necessity of NATO; attitude to stationing US American troops in one´s country; attitude to use of military in the Gulf War; attitude to a European citizenship and feeling as European; significance of the EC for one´s own country and influence on personal life; attitude to unification of Western Europe and membership of the country in the EC; advantageousness of the membership of one´s own country in the EC; regret of a failure of the European Community; attitude to a speeded up integration, a common foreign policy and preference for a ´rapid intervention force´ to cope with crises in world politics; expected development of European integration until the year 2000; hopes or fears for the EC as well as for Germany from united Germany; attitude to EC financial aid for the Soviet Union; attitude to admission of refugees from the southern Mediterranean area, from Eastern European countries and to admission of persons seeking asylum; judgement on the proportion of foreigners from non-EC countries in one´s country and a restriction of rights of these persons; general impression of the EC Commission and the European Parliament; judgement on the success of the common EC agricultural policy and a planned agrcultural reform; preference for national or European decision-making authority in selected political areas; attitude to a European Government; significance of the European Parliament and preference for an increase in authorities; areas in which an expansion of the powers of the European Parliament is supported; attitude to a European Central bank, a common currency, a common foreign policy and defense policy; attitude to the European domestic market 1992; attitude to harmonizing the rights and duties of employers and employees in the member countries through the domestic market. 2. Energy questions, environmental protection and radioactivity: expected effect in the energy sector, on technical norms and environmental protection as well as classification of personal importance of these changes; importance of the fight against unemployment and poverty as well as the securing of the energy supply, environmental protection and supportof under-developed regions in the country; classification of the significance of the greenhouse effect, acid rain and destruction of the ozone layer; knowledge about the most important causes; assessment of price stability, the security of supply and environmental pollution of the individual energy sources; attitude to atomic energy; frequency of obtaining news from television, daily newspaper and radio; most important sources of information about risks of radioactivity; satisfaction with extent to which informed about radioactivity and most important reasons for satisfaction or dissatisfaction with such information; trust in scientists, teachers, authorities and environment groups regarding information about radioactivity; most important characteristics of trustworthy sources of information about radioactivity; assessment of the dangers from nuclear power plants and storage of radioactive wastes (scale); situations in which one is exposed to increased radioactive radiation. Demography: self-classification on a left-right continuum; party allegiance and party preference (Sunday question); behavior at the polls in the last election; party affiliation and union membership; marital status; age at end of education; sex; age; size of household; number of children in household; monthly household income; occupational position; employment in the civil service or private enterprise (company sector); company size; supervisor status; position in household; occupation of head of household; self-assessment of social class; residential status; degree of urbanization; religious denomination; frequency of church attendance; religiousness; city size; region. Also encoded was: date of interview; start of interview; length of interview; presence of third persons during interview; willingness of respondent to cooperate. Indices: opinion leadership (cognitive mobility); postmaterialism; attitude to Europe; status in profession; party preference at state level and on European level; EC support; support for the EC domestic market; media usage. The following questions were posed in Luxembourg: knowledge about the EC presidency of one´s own country and significance of this presidency for the country.

    Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
