AbstractThe major topic is: attitudes of European young people and young adults between 15 and 24 years. Topics: significance of the European Union; expectations of the EU; reasons to remain living with the parents longer; leisure activities; social, cultural, religious, political, athletic involvement; attitude to foreigners; knowledge of foreign languages and willingness to learn foreign languages; stays abroad in the last 2 years stating travel reasons; perceived difficulties studying or working abroad; conduct given personal unemployment; most important demands of an ideal occupation; sources of money of respondent; personal monthly income; use of new technologies (computer, Internet, cell phone, computer games); knowledge about personal rights as EU citizen; importance of topics of European Politics (housing situation, training, job creation and job security, health, consumer protection, nutrition, fight against crime, free choice of place of residence within the EU, social equality, culture, foreign policy, information campaigns for young people, new information technologies, environmental protection); sources used and media to gather information on the EU; approval of ethical questions such as euthanasia, the death penalty, obligatory herapies for pedophiles, limitation on the number of children for people with low income, right to marriage and adoption for homosexuals, obligatory HIV tests, sex before marriage, cloning, genetically modified food; necessary measures for integration of ethical, religious or sexual minorities, the homeless, alcohol and drug addicts and the handicapped; judgement on the responsibility of selected social institutions for making it easier for young people to participate actively in society and preferred measures in this respect. Demography: nationality; self-assessment on a left-right continuum; marital status; age at end of education; sex; age; occupation; position in household; occupation of head of household; degree of urbanization; monthly household income. Also encoded was: date of interview and start of interview; length of interview; number of persons present during interview; willingness of respondent to cooperate; city size; region; interviewer number; possession of a telephone. In Luxembourg, Belgium and Finland the following additional question was posed: language of interview.

NotesIn each country approx. 600 interviews were conducted except for in Holland (approx. 750), Northern Ireland (approx. 200) and Luxembourg (approx. 200). In the Federal Republic of Germany there are separate samples for East and west with approx. 600 respondents each. Youth sample + youth OVeRsample of respondents aged 15 to 24. Data collected in the framework of Eurobarometer 55.1. Comparable data for the candidate countries are available at a later time in the context of Candidate Countries Eurobarometer 2003.1YOUTH (ZA3982).

    Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
