UniverseThe population comprises all German citizens who were at least 18 years old and participated at the Online-Access-Panel by Respondi AG. This panel comprised in 2009 nearly 65000 active members. Recruitment primary works online but also by phone.

2011-7-13Variables about the respondent’s attitudes towards the census 2011 have been added to the data set.--
2011-7-13The variables a03_c1-4 and a05_c1-4 ("Wichtigstes Problem", "Zweitwichtigstes Problem") were added to the data set. These variables include codes for the most important problem and the second most important problem in Germany according to the respondents. The coding is based on the GLES coding scheme.--
2011-7-13The variables b01a_c1-3 ("Gründe für Wahlentscheidung", “reasons for electoral decision“) and b01ax_c1-3 ("Gründe für hypothetische Wahlentscheidung", “reasons for hypothetical electoral decision”) were added to the data set. Their coding is based on the GLES coding scheme.--
2011-7-13It was possible to make an entry into the text field of variable a34 (“Internetnutzung”, “usage of the internet”) while the respective radio button was unchecked. This resulted in a combination of “no answer” and a statement of the amount of time spent on the internet. In this case the entry into the text field was taken as a valid answer. If the text field was left blank, the entry was taken as a missing value.--
2011-7-13Based on their answers of several open questions, three respondents were identified as not belonging to the sample universe (eligible German voters), because they do not hold German citizenship. The respective cases have been deleted from the data set in this pre-release.--
2011-7-13There is doubt about the legitimacy of the participation of 14 respondents. Based on their answers, they do not seem to belong to the sample universe (eligible German voters). Those cases contained in variable problem1 (“Problematische oder nicht plausible Werte: 1. Problem", “problematic or not plausible values: 1st problem”) stated that they were not eligible to vote in the federal election of 2005, that they do not hold the German citizenship since birth and they chose to not make a statement about the date of acquiring the German citizenship. These respondents and/or their parents were also in some cases not born in Germany. The respective cases can be deleted from the data set or excluded from analyses by means of variable problem1.--

  •  German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES)
    The German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) is a DFG-funded project which made its debut just prior to the 2009 federal election. GLES is the largest and most ambitious election study held so far in Germany. Although the initial mandate is to examine and analyse the electorate for three consecutive elections, the aspired goal is to integrate the project within GESIS as an institutionalized election study after the federal election of 2017, and hence to make it a permanent study.
