Abstract1. The following topics were asked about identically at every time of survey: most important political problems of the Federal Republic; intent to participate in the next Federal Parliament election; behavior at the polls in the last Federal Parliament election; sympathy scale for SPD, CDU, CSU, FDP, the Greens and the PDS; satisfaction with achievements of the Federal Government (scale); sympathy scale for the large or the small partner of the government as well as the small and large partner in the opposition; party preference according to rank order procedure and Sunday question; sympathy scale for top politicians of the parties; judgement on economic situation of the country and one´s own economic situation; expected economic situation for the state; self-assessment on a left-right continuum. 2. In at least one or more survey months the following questions were posed: coalition preference; naming the five most important political personalities in the Federal Republic; sympathy scale for the most important top politicians in the Federal Republic; judgement on the normality of the Greens as party; acceptance of a party office by members of state and Federal Parliament of the Greens and personally perceived importance of this topic; judgement whether the SPD stands behind the policies of Gerhard Schroeder and the CDU behind the policies of Angela Merkel; assessment of the unity of SPD, CDU, CSU, FDP and the Greens on important political questions; general satisfaction with democracy; interest in politics; the right people in leading positions; judgement on the situation of the German economy; expectations of the opposition; judgement on the dispute culture in politics; preferred CDU/CSU candidate for chancellor; influence of contributions on political decisions of the Federal Government under Helmut Kohl; approval of compensation for the financial damages caused by Kohl through contributions; judgement on treatment of Kohl on the occasion of celebration of German unity; judgement on political achievements of Kohl in general; approval of the resignation of Wolfgang Schaeuble and preferred successor; the one primarily to blame for the CDU problems; trust in the willingness of the CDU to clear up the contribution affair; attitude to demand for resignation of Roland Koch; personally perceived importance of CDU contribution incidents; attitude to criminal prosecution of Helmut Kohl; assessment about inofficial SPD bank accounts; personally perceived importance of SPD flight affair in NRW; assessment of the most influential person in the CDU/CSU (Merkel, Merz or Stoiber); approval of reunification in 1989 as well as currently; perceived joy or concern about unification; fulfillment of personal expectations and solution of problems regarding unification; judgement on the efforts of the Federal Government for achievement of equivalent living conditions in East and West; comparison of time before and after the turning point in the categories personal situation in general, personal economic situation, social security, personal freedoms and relationship with fellow-men; assessment of degree of rapproachment of the Germans since unity; attitude to the terms ´Ossi´ {´Easty´} and ´Wessi´ {´Westy´}; assessment about the length of integration in years; attitude to dissatisfaction of the East Germans; national identity of respondent; trip to East Germany after the turning point; attitude to coping with the past of the GDR; satisfaction with condition of society in general and in comparison with Western European; expected economic situation in Germany and personal economic situation in a year; issue ability of the parties in the areas economy, job creation, finances, tax policy, foreigner policy, environmental policy and securing of pensions; expectations of tax reform; attitude to the attempt of the CDU/CSU to reject the tax reform; attitude to pension financing and preferential tax treatment of private provision for old age; assessment of personal financial future situation as pensioner in comparison to current pensioners; judgement on the current social situation of pensioners and assessment of the security of pensions in 20 years; attitude to private provision for old age for employees; rights to a compulsory pension, a civil servant npension, a company or private provision; possession of life insurance, savings assets, shares, stocks and shares and real estate; attitude to PDS participation in the pension discussion; judgement on the work of the Federal Government; government ability of the CDU/CSU; knowledge about the Federal President and evaluation his work in general; attitude to combat military service for women; concept about the future of compulsory military service and introduction of compulsory military service for women; appropriateness of wage increases demanded by IG Metall; expected advantages and disadvantages for the country from membership in the EU; attitude to introduction of the Euro on 1 January 1999; significance of loss in value of the Euro against the Dollar for Germany and personally perceived importance of this topic; expectation of success of the Euro; attitude to EU Enlargement regarding the Baltic countries as well as Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary; significance of the EU enlargement to the East for Germany; assessment of the success of the EU summit in Nice; approval of equalization of the votes in the EU Council of Ministers; approval of restriction of relation of EU countries to Austria since the FPOE has a part in the government; agreement with government participation of FPOE and Joerg Haider; candidate preference for the presidency in the USA; blame for jeopardy to the peace process between Palestinians and Israelis; agreement with a Green Card for foreign IT specialists and the CDU postcard action in NRW against this measure; personally perceived importance of the postcard action; fairness of the accusation of foreigner hostility of the CDU; feeling of threat to democracy from the NPD; naming the most dangerous of the right-wing radical parties (DVU {deutsche Volksunion}, NPD, Republicans); approval of an NPD prohibition; perceived need of new laws to combat right-wing radicalism; preferred use of additional revenues from the sale of mobile telephone licenses; attitude to homosexual marriage and equal tax treatment; retrospect for the year 2000; prospect for the year 2001. Demography: sex; age (classified); marital status; living together with a partner; presence of children in household; school degree (East or West); number of children not of school-age; number of children under 13 years old; ages of children; government examination or similar; recognized school degree; completed vocational training; employment; assessment of personal jeopardy to job; occupational group; size of household and number of persons 18 years old or older; head of household as well as his occupational group and employment; union member in household; religious denomination; frequency of church attendance; jeopardy to job or unemployment of close persons; party inclination and party identification. NotesThe data set consists of a cumulation of monthly surveys conducted from January to December 2000. ZA Study No. 3425 contains the survey in the western part of the Federal Republic. This data set contains an additional weighting factor which makes it possible to combine the two data sets into an all-German weighted survey.

    The ´Politbarometer´ surveys are performed since 1977 at about monthly intervals by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen (Institute for election research) for the ZDF (Second German TV network). Since 1990 it is also available for the newly formed German states. They are intended to poll the opinions and attitudes of eligible Germans with regard to current events and issues as well as to political parties and individual politicians.
