AbstractAttitudes towards the EU. Topics: associations with the term ‘Europe’; attitude towards the following statements: feeling closer to other Europeans than to people from other parts of the world, people in Europe have a lot in common, feeling European; feelings about the EU; level of cooperation between EU member states is close enough; attitude towards the impact of the EU membership for the own country in terms of: economic situation, choice of consumer products, social welfare, mobility of students and workers, citizens’ security and protection, environment, infrastructures, role in the world; most important priorities for the new European Commission; most important event during Austria’s membership in the EU (only in AT); assessment of Finland’s influence on EU policy making (only in FI); attitude towards the impact of Sweden’s EU membership on daily life (only in SE). Demography: age; sex; nationality; age at end of education; occupation; professional position; region; type of community; own a mobile phone and fixed (landline) phone; household composition and household size. Additionally coded was: respondent ID; language of the interview; weighting factor.

UniversePopulation (aged 15 years or more) of the respective nationalities of the European Union Member States, resident in Austria, Finland and Sweden. The survey covers the national population of citizens as well as the population of citizens of all the European Union Member States that are residents in these countries and have a sufficient command of the national languages to answer the questionnaire.

     The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
