AbstractAttitude towards the EU Cooperation and Verification Mechanism for Bulgaria and Romania. Topics: importance of the following problems in the own country: shortcomings in the judicial system, corruption, organized crime (only in BG); assessment of the development of the aforementioned issues compared to ten years ago and expected development in the next five years; attitude towards the EU having a role in tackling each of the aforementioned problems in the own country; knowledge of the EU Cooperation and Verification Mechanism to support the own country in reaching the standards to tackle each of the aforementioned problems; assessment of the impact of the EU action through the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism as positive regarding these problems; preference regarding the duration of the EU action through the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism: action should continue until the own country is at a standard comparable to other EU member states, action should be phased out over the coming years, action should be stopped now. Demography: age; sex; nationality; age at end of education; occupation; professional position; type of community; own a mobile phone and fixed (landline) phone; household composition and household size; region. Additionally coded was: respondent ID; country; type of phone line; weighting factor.

UniversePopulation of the respective nationalities of Bulgaria and Romania and other EU nationals, resident in Bulgaria and Romania and aged 15 years and over. The survey covers the national population of citizens in Bulgaria and Romania as well as the population of citizens of all the European Union Member States that are residents in these countries and have a sufficient command of the national languages to answer the questionnaire.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
