AbstractEuropean citizenship. Topics: familiarity with the term ´citizen of the European Union´; self-rated knowledge about the rights of citizens of the European Union; knowledge test on EU citizenship: people have to ask to become a citizen of the EU, every citizen of the EU is at the same time a citizen of his / her own country, one can choose not to be a citizen of the EU; knowledge test with regard to selected rights of citizens in the EU; preferred level of help from EU member states embassies in countries where own country does not have an own embassy; attitude towards the entitlement of non-EU family members to get assistance by member state embassies under the same conditions as EU citizens. Demography: sex; age; age at end of education; occupation; professional position; type of community. Additionally coded was: interviewer ID; language of the interview; country; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; type of phone line; call history; region; weighting factor.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
