AbstractAttitudes towards the EU. Perception of the own region. Topics: assessment of the current situation and expected development in the own region regarding: quality of life, economy; most important problems in the own region; trust in the European Union; best placed political representative to explain impact of European policies on day-to-day life. Demography: age; sex; nationality; age at end of education; occupation; professional position; type of community; own a mobile phone and fixed (landline) phone; household composition and household size. Additionally coded was: respondent ID; country; type of phone line; region; weighting factor.

UniverseThe population of the respective nationalities of the European Union Member States, resident in each of the 27 Member States and aged 15 years and over. Flash Eurobarometer 356 was surveyed in 170 EU regions. 300 interviews were carried out in each NUTS region (NUTS 1 or 2 level) except in Åland (Finland), Ciudad Autónoma de Ceuta and Ciudad Autónoma de Melilla (Spain) where 150 interviews were conducted. NUTS 1 regions were surveyed in Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. NUTS 2 regions were surveyed in Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France, Italy, Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands and Poland. The respondents were expected to have a sufficient command of the national languages to answer the questionnaire.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
