AbstractAttitude to the European Community. Topics: Personal opinion leadership; frequency of political discussions; judgement on the general and the economic situation of the country as well as one´s own financial situation; attitude to the market economy; judgement on the speed of economic reforms in one´s country; satisfaction with the development of democracy and the realization of human rights in the country; most important reasons for satisfaction with democracy; feeling as a European; knowledge of selected European and international organizations as well as the president of the EC Commission; attitude to the EC; attitude to one´s own country joining the EC; preferred time interval for such a membership; expected advantages or disadvantages for one´s own country from EC membership; attitude to agreements and cooperation with the EC; preference for territorial integrity or self-determination for the peoples of Yugoslavia; judgement on the EC initiatives to solve the crisis in Yugoslavia; attitude to EC aid for the Soviet Union; preference for continued existence of the Soviet Union or division in independent states; knowledge about the European domestic market 1992; expected effects of the European domestic market on the relation of one´s own country to Western Europe; judgement on EC, Soviet Union, Japan and USA as fair trading partners; interest in information on selected European institutions; most important sources of information about the EC; planned work migration to Western Europe; certainty of plans to emigrate to the west; intent to participate in the next election; party preference; union membership; religiousness; native language; national or ethnic affiliation; city size; self-classification on a left-right continuum. Except in Albania the following questions were also posed: frequency of use of western media; detailed information on satellite television programs and radio stations received. Also encoded was: date of interview; time of start of interview; length of interview; number of persons present during the interview; willingness of respondent to cooperate.

The data sets of Eurobarometer 1 in Central and Eastern Europe are archived unter ZA Study No. 2252-2260. The data set contains the data of all involved countries in a cumulated form. This cumulation was produced by the Zentrum fuer Europaeische Umfrageanalysen und Studien (ZEUS), Mannheim.

    The Central and Eastern Eurobarometer were conducted on the behalf of the European Commision after the fall of the ´iron curtain´, between 1990 and 1997, in order to monitor the economic and political transition as well as attitudes towards Europe and the European Union in Central and Eastern Europe. For this purpose, representative national samples have annually been drawn in up to 20 countries of the region, covering future applicant or candidate countries and selected former Soviet Republics (CIS). Respondents were interviewed face-to-face in the respective national language. The standard sample size is 1000 respondents per country.
