AbstractEuropean citizenship. Topics: familiarity with the term ´citizen of the European Union´; knowledge test on EU citizenship: people have to ask to become a citizen of the EU, every citizen of the EU is at the same time a citizen of his / her own country, one can choose not to be a citizen of the EU; knowledge test with regard to selected rights of citizens in the EU; familiarity with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union; self-rated knowledge about the rights of citizens of the European Union; preferred sources of information on the rights of citizens of the EU: local authorities, public offices and libraries, press, TV, schools and universities, European Commission, consumer organisations, local member of national parliament, MEP, internet, trade unions, professional bodies, other. Demography: sex; age; current type of education; age at end of education; occupation; professional position; type of community; region. Additionally coded was: country; questionnaire number; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; weighting factor.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
