AbstractAttitude to political unification of Europe. Topics: Feeling of belonging to a geographical region; regional origins and local residency; changes in region; mobility readiness; influence of the European Community on the development of the region in general and on special economic areas; attitude to jurisdictions about distributions between the country and European authorities; judgement on the economic difficulties of agriculture; attitude to the farmers demonstrations and use of force at such demonstrations; prospects for the future of agriculture; occupational prospects of farmers; the significance of the Common Market for agriculture as well as for industry; assumed influences of the Common Market on modernization, sales and the competition situation for agricultural products; assumed influences of further countries joining the European Community on agriculture, industry and one´s own country in general; familiarity and judgement on the Mansholt Plan; postmaterialism (scale); most important political goals; danger of an economic crisis and danger of war (scale); attitude to political unification of Europe; personal willingness to make sacrifices for a unification; self-assessment of extent to which informed about European economic problems, problems of national agriculture and of regional economic development; judgement on media reporting about these problems; assessment of the chances of a political unification of Europe; personal opinion leadership; receptiveness regarding new things; party preference (Sunday question); religiousness; self-classification as conservative or progressive; union member. NotesThe total of cases of the data set is distributed among the individual countries as follows: Belgium 1296 cases, Federal Republic of Germany 2014 cases, France 2046 cases, Italy 1806 cases, Netherlands 1405 cases. Data provider: ICPSR (Study No. 7275). The EC studies can be viewed as precursors of the Eurobarometers, archived under ZA Study Nos. 0986-0995 as well as 1036-1039 and 1206-1209 and 1318 ff. A split questionnaire was used. With the question on jurisdiction distribution for part of the respondents regional preference was addressed instead of national.

  •  EB - Standard and Special Eurobarometer
    Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
