AbstractPolitical attitudes and attitudes to European integration as well as to the Common Market. Topics: Satisfaction with the social system and the functioning of democracy in the country (the latter posed twice in the form of a control question; once on a 5 point scale and once on an 11 point scale); attitude to various forms of change of the social system; interest in problems of the EC and in the policies of other countries; stereotypes of Europeans, Americans, Russians and Chinese; naming countries that should be accepted into the EC or should be excluded; judgement on the effects of the Common Market on the economy, job market, prices and on the benefit of one´s own country as well as of the remaining countries; voting behavior given a hypothetical referendum on membership in the EC; solidarity for the benefit of other EC member states; attitude to direct election of a European Parliament and to a common election campaign of parties of the same orientation; judgement on the importance of environmental protection, social equity, national representation of interests regarding the superpowers, unemployment and fighting inflation, control of multi-national companies, modernization of the education system, strengthening defense and consumer protection; satisfaction with efforts of the national government to solve these problems and suitability of the European level for such decisions; attitude to a European currency, army, Olympics team, flag, criminal law and a European foreign policy; identification as national citizen, European citizen or citizen of the world; judgement on one´s own extent to which informed and personal information deficit regarding various European questions; attitude to European agriculture market policies, peace policies, policies on developing countries and economic growth policy; general contentment with life; number of trips abroad; knowledge of a foreign language; reading daily newspapers; trade union in which respondent is a member member; number of employees at work; left-right orientation; age at conclusion of school education; opinion leadership. Demography: religiousness; party preference and party ties ; age at completing school training; age; sex; marital status; nationality; religious denomination; school education; occupation; company size; household income; size of household; composition of household; head of household; city size; state.

  •  EB - Standard and Special Eurobarometer
    Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
