AbstractMotives for leaving and modalities of moving to the FRG of citizens of the GDR. Description of course of employment and housing situation as well as regional mobility in the Federal Republic. Comparisons of the situation in the Federal Republic with the earlier GDR. Judgement on the entire change from moving. Topics: Dates of entry to the FRG; departure route and processing time of departure application; motives for leaving the GDR; time differences in moving of family members; city size of place of residence left in the GDR; training and employment data; course of employment; sanctions after filing departure application; problems in recognition of qualification or training degrees from the GDR; course of training and employment up to now in the FRG; reasons for unemployment and personal assessment of the reasons for unemployment; urgency of wish for work; employment suitable for qualification; acquisition of new knowledge and skills in the FRG; differences in work climate in comparison of FRG and GDR; today's activity as alternative to unemployment or desired work; satisfaction with current occupational situation and planned change of activity; current most important source of income; housing situation after moving; length of residence in transit or refugee housing; regional mobility in the Federal Republic and reasons for change of place of residence; current residential status; size of residence; persons in household and their degree of relationship to respondent; change of residence sought and reasons for this; judgement on experience with selected authorities; information on particularly bad experiences with authorities; protest filed or suit against decisions of authorities; C-identification applied for; larger acquisitions already purchased or currently deferred; purchase mistakes; objects one should bring along from the GDR; difficulties with installment payments and repaying loans; doing without trips or acquisitions; changes in leisure time behavior compared to earlier; participation in public life and political activity; expected support from relatives as well as friends in integration in the Federal Republic and judgement on their support; contacts with West Germans and experiences and problems there; membership in an organization for former citizens of the GDR; efforts to travel to the GDR; visits to the GDR; meeting relatives from the GDR in third countries; identification as former citizen of the GDR; discrimination experienced due to GDR origin; perceived typical differences between people from the GDR and FRG; feeling at home at new place of residence and duration of integration; satisfaction with personal departure decision; thoughts of returning; moving to a foreign country; fulfilled expectations in the FRG; importance of areas of life; judgement on inequality of occupational chances for women in the Federal Republic; change of attitude to employment of women since moving to the Federal Republic; attitude to the equal rights discussion in society; integration difficulties of the children; occupational restrictions due to lack of child care; preference for child or occupation; partner origin from the GDR or FRG; activity of partner and possibly unemployment of partner after moving; personal advice for future emigrants from East Germany.

UniverseThe population of former citizens of the GDR who moved to the FRG between the middle of April 1983 and the middle of April 1986 and were registered in the Federal Registry in Giessen and Berlin. Included were men and women over 18 or under 65 years old at the time of departure.

Representative random sample. Of the 3071 cases 444 were drawn in Berlin and 2627 in Giessen.
