AbstractJudgement on parties and politicians as well as information on use of sources of information about parties and politicians. Political questions. Questions on the relationship of the Eastern Germans and Western Germans with each other. Political participation. Topics: Judgement on the current economic situation in Western Germany as well as in Eastern Germany and expected further development for the next year; interest in politics; election participation at the last Federal Parliament election; party preference (first vote, second vote and Sunday question); time of personal voting decision; sympathy scale for the SPD, CDU/CSU, FDP, Alliance 90/The Greens, Republicans, PDS as well as for selected top politicians of the parties; issue relevance and issue ability of the parties regarding economic questions, the fight against unemployment as well as crime, housing supply, environmental protection, a suitable role for Germany in world politics and regulation of the influx of foreigners; attitude to nuclear energy, stimulation of the economy, participation of Federal German Armed Forces in military missions of the UN or NATO, influx of foreigners, residence supply and suitable participation by Germany in world politics; attitude to integration of foreigners and policies towards foreigners (scale); reading tabloids and daily newspapers; extent of use of newspapers; watching television news, organized according to broadcasters; daily newspaper or television as most important source of information about the political position of parties and top candidates; parties whose information material and brochures as well as election advertising was seen on television and in whose election meetings or election events one participated; frequency of political conversations with friends and in one´s family; taking notice of election predictions before the Federal Parliament election and influence of these predictions on one´s own voting decision; self-classification on a left-right continuum; postmaterialism; satisfaction with democracy (scale); judgement on the political system; satisfaction with the achievements of the Federal Government; desired setting of priorities by the government in environmental protection, criminal prosecution, defense, pensions, art and culture; attitude to socialism as an idea; attitude to obedience and discipline as well as law and order; state and public good; anomy, future prospects and political effectiveness of the individual (scales); attitude to the relationship of the Western Germans to the Eastern Germans in the situation after unification (scale); personal participation in selected forms of political participation; national pride and pride in the achievements of the GDR; achievements of which one can be proud as a German; judgement on the general as well as personal economic situation and expected further development; living together with a partner; self-classification of social class; religiousness and strength of religious ties; frequency of prayer; behavior at the polls in the Federal Parliament election before the last; party inclination and party identification; duration of party inclination; union member in household; personal party membership; possession of a telephone; possession of telephone answering device; entry of telephone in telephone book; earlier participation in a personal interview or telephone interview or mail survey or tests; general attitude to survey research; willingness to participate in follow-up surveys. Also encoded was: date of interview; city size; age of interviewer.

Notes1000 surveys were conducted in the western part of the country, 1046 in the eastern part. The investigation is part of an omnibus survey. The study is part of the so-called election study 1994. It consists of a pre-election investigation (ZA Study No. 2599), the Politbarometer West (ZA Study No. 2546), the Politbarometer East (ZA Study No. 2559) and a pre-election study (ZA Study No. 2600).
