AbstractJudgement of parties and politicians. Attitude to political questions. Topics: satisfaction with democracy; strength of the respondent`s interest in politics in general and in the Bundestag election campaign 2005; interest in election campaign advertising via posters, TV, radio, flyer, Internet, information stand and election campaign event; most important election campaign issues reminded; political knowledge: meaning of first vote and second vote; own participation at the parliamentary elections; voting decision: first vote and second vote; reminded constituency candidates of the SPD, CDU, FDP, Bündnis90/die Grünen and the Linkspartei/PDS; total number of mentioned candidates; sympathy scale for the mentioned candidates; most important reasons for one`s own voting decision (second vote;) motives for not voting; chancellor preference for Gerhard Schröder or Angela Merkel; satisfaction with the performance of the Federal Government by SPD and Bündnis90/die Grünen; preference for SPD, CDU, Bündnis90/die Grünen, FDP, die Linke/PDS or NPD as party in power; probability of a government participation of the preferred party; sympathy scale for SPD, CDU, CSU, Bündnis90/die Grünen, FDP, die Linke/PDS, NPD, Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel; self-assessment on a left-right continuum; left-right classification of SPD, CDU, CSU, Bündnis90/die Grünen, FDP, die Linke/PDS, NPD, Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel; most important problems in Germany; the most competent party to solve these problems; opinion on the policy of Angela Merkel; personal opinion and presumed position of the parties with regard to: introduction of the so called Bürgerversicherung (health insurance), full membership of Turkey in the EU, added value tax increase and the prolongation of the running times of German nuclear power stations; assessment of the problem solution competence, sympathy, reliability, strong leadership, team ability, representation of interests abroad, support by his own party and citizen proximity of the candidates for the chancellorship (Schröder and Merkel); unity of SPD, CDU/CSU, Bündnis90/die Grünen, FDP, die Linke/PDS, and NPD; political effectiveness (scale: efficacy); right-wing extremism (scale); party preference (Sunday question); frequency of the reception of political information from daily newspaper, television and internet. Demography: sex; age: month and year of birth; denomination; frequency of church attendance; the highest school-leaving qualification or aspired school-leaving qualification; completed professional teaching; employment; employment in the public service; professional position; household size; present unemployment of household members; marital status; living together with a partner; number of children; number of children under 18 years; membership or function in a citizens´ action group, a party, trade organization or labor union; party inclination and party identification; household net income; self-assessment of social class. Additionally coded was: sex, age (year of birth) and the highest school-leaving qualification of the interviewer; region; proportional and disproportionately person weight, east west design weight; federal state; county; size of city; date of interview; duration of interview. Interviewer rating: presence of other persons during the interview; intervention of other persons during the interview; willingness to cooperate and assessment of the credibility of the respondent; detail of the questions at which the details were less reliable.

Disproportional stratified multistage sampling by random route method based on the ADM-design. Federal states, Regierungsbezirke and municipality types, served as stratification features. A systematic sampling procedure ensured all persons belonging to a household the same chance to get into the sample. In the final sample people from the new federal states are overrepresented to get a sufficiently large case number for this subpopulation. Of the 2540 people asked 877 (34.5%) live in the new federal states.
