AbstractMental well-being. Telecommunications in the household. Internet use and internet safety. Animal protection and animal welfare. Topics: 1. Mental well-being: extent of health limitations in moderate activities and climbing stairs; frequency of selected problems due to physical and emotional health problems (frustration, negligence); extent of the impairment of activities due to pain; frequency of selected feelings in the past month (mood: full of life, tense, downcast, calm and peaceful, full of energy, downhearted and depressed, worn out, happy, tired); frequency of limitations in social activities due to physical health or emotional problems; sought professional help due to psychological or emotional health problems and kind of professional consulted; difficulties with work or other activities due to emotional problems (reduction of time at work, frustration, negligence, absenteeism from work); received psychotherapeutic treatment, taken psychopharmaceuticals; admission to hospital due to psychological or emotional health problems; preferred person to contact in case of emotional problems; assessment of the difficulties finding information on psychological or emotional health problems; attitude towards people with psychological or emotional health problems (scale: danger to others, unpredictable, self-inflicted problems, incurable). 2. Telecommunications in the household: number of selected telecommunications equipment and services in the household: standard (43) or widescreen (169) television, contract mobile phone, pre-paid card, mobile phone with access to advanced data communications services, fixed telephone, ISDN, desktop computer, laptop computer, internet access, wi-fi; type of television reception; additional fees for the reception of TV channels apart from the usual television licence (subscription to a cable-TV, a satellite, or a telephone network company); operator of the fixed telephone line and provider company used for fixed telephone services; willingness to change the fixed telephone line provider or the fixed call provider; willingness to give up the landline if mobile phone use for local and national calls would be at the same price as calls with the fixed telephone; reasons for not having a fixed telephone line; frequency of use of public payphones by household members and by the respondent; reasons for using public payphones; number of household members who use a mobile phone; features for switching to a different provider (e.g. online games, internet access); main benefits of a mobile phone; personally used provider for mobile telephony; intention to change the mobile network provider; importance of the cost of international calls (roaming) in the decision for a new mobile network provider; increase in roaming prices that would make the respondent change the mobile phone provider; reduced use of mobile phones due to receiving unsolicited commercial messages (spam); reasons for not having a mobile phone in the household. 3. Internet use and internet safety: type of internet connection in the own household; device used to access the internet (computer, mobile phone, TV, etc.); frequency of internet access of the household member that uses the internet the most; usage-based billing of internet use or flat-rate; used provider for internet services; perceived speed of the internet connection; considerations regarding the change of internet service provider; reasons for not having a broadband internet access (e.g. DSL); willingness to change to broadband internet access under the following premises: no rental charges for fixed telephony line, package of broadband internet service together with television channels, or 10 or 20 % cheaper offers; preferred change in service subscriptions (keep broadband service but drop the fixed telephone service, purchase a package of broadband internet service together with television channels or with mobile telephony service); willingness to upgrade the broadband internet access; reduction in PC use due to receiving spam; combating spam by installing a free or purchased antispam software; combating viruses by installing a free or purchased antivirus software; considerations to change the internet provider in case of problems with spam or viruses; reasons for not having internet access at home; willingness to subscribe to the internet at selected conditions (free internet access via the fixed telephony line, package of internet service along with television channels or with mobile telephony services, less expensive offer); attitude towards communication packages; knowledge test of the telephone number of emergency services; knowledge of the telephone number of emergency services; knowledge of the telephone number 112 for emergency calls within the EU; only in the EU25 was asked: internet use in the last month and place of use, self-rated skills as internet user; again all: age group of children in the own household; based on the child whose birthday is closest: sex of the child; age (classified); location of internet use; filtering or blocking of certain websites by filtering and blocking programs; presence of respondent during internet use of the child; possession of mobile phone by the child; setting up rules for the use of: television, mobile phone, games consoles, internet, or computer; kind of rules set for internet use; contact with hazardous or illegal internet content; knowledge of the responsible authority to whom report prohibited or dangerous content, e.g. child pornography; child is informed what to do in case of encountering uncomfortable situations on the internet; necessity for more information on the protection of children in the own household from illegal or harmful content or contacts on the internet; preferred institutions or providers of this information; preferred information medium. Only in Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, and Turkey was asked: Food and farm animal welfare: frequency of buying food for the own household; frequency of meat consumption; consideration of aspects of animal welfare or animal protection when purchasing meat; ever visited a farm with livestock; designation of three species of farm animals for which the conditions of welfare and protection should be most urgently improved; difficulty to identify animal welfare-friendly products by specific labels; expected personal influence on animal welfare through the purchase of animal welfare-friendly products; assessment of the level of welfare and protection of different farm animals; preferred kind of production when buying eggs (battery cage systems, non-caged indoor systems, free-range systems); willingness to pay more for eggs from animal welfare-friendly production; knowledge of EU legislation regarding animal welfare and protection; assessment of the consideration of animal welfare and protection in the national food and agricultural policy; assessment of the level of animal welfare and protection in the EU. Demography: nationality; left-right self-placement; marital status; sex; age; age at end of education; occupation; type of community; household composition and household size; national provenance of the respondent and his parents (migratory background); own a mobile phone and fixed (landline) phone. Also encoded was: date of interview; beginning of interview; duration of interview; persons present during the interview; respondent cooperation; interview language (only in Luxembourg, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Malta and Turkey); size of locality; region; weighting factor; interviewer-ID.

UniversePopulation of the respective nationalities of the European Union Member States, resident in each of the Member States and aged 15 years and over. In the two acceding countries (Bulgaria and Romania) and in the two candidate countries (Croatia and Turkey) and in the Turkish Cypriot Community, the survey covers the national population of citizens of the respective nationalities and the population of citizens of all the European Union Member States that are residents in those counties and have a sufficient command of one of the respechtive national language(s) to answer the questionnaire.

2013-4-8P7_PT REGION I - NUTS 2 (V1975)Starting with Eurobarometer 62 the NUTS 2 REGIONS for PORTUGAL have changed. In accordance with the official EUROSTAT NUTS 2 version 2003 the region “LISBOA E VALE DO TEJO” is split up and the subregion “Lezíria do Tejo” reinstated to the “Alentejo” Region; “Médio Tejo” and “Oeste” are reinstated to the “Centro” Region. The documentation for NUTS 2 code 3 “Lisboa e Vale do Tejo” is not correct and should read “LISBOA” (NUTS2003-2010: PT17). Regions “CENTRO” and “ALENTEJO” do not change names but regional coverage (NUTS2003-2010: PT16 and PT18). The regions “NORTE” (PT11) and “ALGARVE” (PT15) remain unchanged. Starting with Eurobarometer 62 the autonomous regions AÇORES (PT20) and MADEIRA (PT30) are not covered anymore. This has been confirmed by TNS Opinion & Social as of March 26, 2013.
2013-4-8P7_GR REGION II- NUTS 1 (V2013)Starting with Eurobarometer 62 the Northern and Southern Aegean Islands ("Voreio Aigaio" with NUTS2 code GR41 and "Notio Aigaio" with Starting with Eurobarometer 62 the Northern and Southern Aegean Islands ("Voreio Aigaio" with NUTS 2 code GR41 and "Notio Aigaio" with NUTS 2 code GR42) as well as the Ionian Islands ("Ionia Nisia" with NUTS 2 code GR22) are not covered. The documentation for NUTS 1 code 4 is not correct. The data only cover the island of Crete (NUTS 2 code GR43). This has been confirmed by TNS Opinion & Social as of March 26, 2013.

NotesIncluding remaining candidate countries after the 2004 enlargement and the Turkish Cypriot Community (TCC) The topical module on ´Animal welfare´(QD) was only asked in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Croatia. In the EU member countries identical questions were surveyed in the framework of Eurobarometer 63.2 (ZA4234). For those parts of the questionnaire ´E-Communications´ where respondents are asked to answer for their household, the ´number of individuals in each household´ was introduced as additional weighting criteria (W21 to W39), and the representative samples of individuals aged 15 and more converted into household samples. For more details, see the technical specifications annexed to the basic bilingual questionnaire. The topical module ´E-Communications´ (QB) is partly a replication of a former IPSOS-INRA study outside the Eurobarometer framework: Telecoms Services Indicators 2004 and 2002

  •  EB - Standard and Special Eurobarometer
    Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
