AbstractFuture social reality in Europe. Topics: expectations regarding people’s lives in the own country in 20 years’ time; attitude towards the following statements about social reality in 20 years’ time: people will earn less due to competition from rising economies, no guarantee to find good job for well educated people, increasing dependence of success in life from own efforts, better quality of life due to technological progress, more equal opportunities at work for men and women, more equal share of daily tasks at home, higher retirement age, better working conditions, wider gap between rich and poor in the own country, easier access to education, weaker family ties, more difficult to find affordable housing, better understanding between people from different cultures, more involvement of people in political decision making, more social engagement, difficulty to afford medical treatment; attitude towards selected political issues: higher taxes to improve public services, emphasis of policies on quality of life, stronger public support of people in social engagement, social support of caring for elderly and sick people, higher taxes for people without children, more respectful lifestyle with regard to the environment, more independence of social and economic development within the EU from the rest of the world, policies to reduce gap between rich and poor in the own country. Demography: sex; age; age at end of education; occupation; professional position; type of community; household composition and household size; own a mobile phone and fixed (landline) phone. Additionally coded was: respondent ID; interviewer ID; language of the interview; country; type of phone line; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; region; weighting factor.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
