AbstractOpinion on foreign policy issues, EU, NATO and UN. Political attitudes and behaviour. Party assessement. Topics: Assessment of the danger posed by: international terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, insecure situation in the Balkans and the Middle East, raw material countries put Germany under pressure, consequences of environmental pollution and climate change, influx of too many refugees, radical Muslims, Islamic fundamentalism, Russia´s aggressive foreign policy, dictatorships; averting these dangers only by cooperation between the EU and the US vs. EU alone; assessment of the danger of the USA´s supremacy; opinion on German foreign policy (should primarily represent German interests, in the event of human rights violations, Germany must do everything possible to protect them internationally as well, Germany is losing weight in foreign policy due to the economic crisis, Germany must stand up for the unification of Europe); opinion on the justification of an attack war; opinion on NATO (without NATO intervention in the Balkans would still be war, only NATO is militarily in a position to cope with crises worldwide, especially henchmen of the USA, NATO should provide international order as a world police force); opinion on the tasks and operational areas of the German armed forces; retaining military service vs. onversion into a professional army; approval of various statements on the US; approval of various statements on German-American relations; knowledge of the draft European Constitution; expected influence of a European Constitution on the further development of the EU; requirements for the EU in the next few years (more closeness to the citizens, more capacity for action, more democracy, better transparency); evaluation of selected characteristics of the EU (e. g. abolition of border controls, free choice of place of residence and work, etc.); opinion at the time of the accession of some Eastern European countries to the EU; opinion on selected statements on the enlargement of the EU and Turkey´s accession to the EU; opinion on the further development of the EU (EU countries would have to give more powers to the EU vs. individual EU countries should decide for themselves as much as possible); opinion on the level of payments made by the FRG to the EU; preferred role of Europeans in the world; rather advantages or disadvantages for Germany due to EU membership; presentation of the meaning of the term globalisation; predominance of opportunities or risks due to globalisation; agreement to statements on the UN; satisfaction with democracy; satisfaction with the performance of the federal government and the opposition in the Bundestag; participation in the 2002 federal elections and voting decision; satisfaction with the party elected at that time; party preference (Sunday question); sympathy-scale for the parties SPD, CDU, CSU, FDP, Bündnis90/Die Grünen, PDS and Republikaner; time for a change of government; better problem-solving competence of a CDU/CSU-led federal government; party with the greatest commitment for Europe. Demography: sex; age (birth year); education; vocational education/training; current or former employment status; current or former occupational position; employment in the public service; scope of occupational activity; trade union membership of the respondent/ a household member; affiliation with trade unions; marital status; number of persons contributing to household income; net household income; household size; number of persons in the household aged 18 and over; confession; frequency of church attendance; attachment to the church. Additionally coded was: Questionnaire number; West/East; version of questionnaire; weighting factors; federal state; size of locality; character of place of residence; respondent´s social class assessed by interviewer; interview duration in minutes.
