Abstract | Attitudes towards the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland. Topics: meaning of the EU to the respondent; assessment of Ireland’s membership in the EU as a good thing; most important political fields in Ireland that need EU support; awareness of the impact of the EU on personal life; awareness of a campaign about the EU’s role in Ireland and name of campaign; participation in the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty in 2008; voting decision; reasons for not voting; reasons for voting in favour or against the Lisbon Treaty; assessment of the Lisbon Treaty as good for Ireland; most trustworthy sources of information about the Lisbon Treaty; used sources of information; awareness of the EU guarantees to Ireland in relation to the Lisbon Treaty; satisfaction with guarantees; importance of the agreement to further dispatch EU commissioners from each member state for Ireland; attitude towards the following statements on the impact of the guarantees on the Lisbon Treaty on Ireland: will allow to keep own tax system, allows Ireland to keep its neutrality, will retain control of sensitive ethical issues, better protection of worker’s rights, will retain a commissioner in Europe, make no difference; impact of the guarantees on voting decision in the referendum in 2009; intention to vote in the referendum; voting decision; reasons for voting in favour or against the Lisbon Treaty; reasons for changing voting decision; assessment of the persuasiveness of YES and NO campaign; attitude towards selected statements on each of the campaigns: treats citizens as responsible decision makers, emotionally engaging, paternalistic; participation in the Dáil election in 2007; voting decision.
