AbstractKnowledge and use of emergency numbers. Topics: use of national emergency numbers or of the international emergency number 112; knowledge of the European Union-wide emergency number 112; perceived information on the emergency number 112 in the last twelve months in the own country; source of the information; approval of the following statements: useful to have European Union-wide emergency number, people in the own country are adequately informed about the existence of the emergency number 112, own country should do more to facilitate contact to emergency services via 112 for disabled users; kind of called emergency numbers in the last twelve months; kind of telephone used; technical difficulty with the call; language problems; exact information about location; follow-up to call. Demography: sex; age; occupation; professional position; type of community; personal impairments. Additionally coded was: respondent ID; interviewer ID; language of the interview; country; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; type of phone line; call history; region; weighting factor.

    The Flash Eurobarometer were launched by the European Commission in the late eighties, turning out a Monthly Monitor between in 1994 and 1995. These “small scale” surveys are conducted in all EU member states at times, occasionally reducing or enlarging the scope of countries as a function of specific topics. The typical sample size is 500-1000 respondents per country and interviews are usually conducted by phone in the respective national language. The Flash Eurobarometer include series on special topics (Common Currency, EU Enlargement, Information Society, Entrepreneurship, Innovation) as well as special target group polls, particularly company managers with enterprise related topics.
