Errata in current version
2012-2-8Variable "ostwest"Value labels have been mixed up. Correct labels are 1: new federal states, 2: old federal states.
2012-3-2Variable "pre104"Translation mistake: Value 5 (“nicht erwerbstätig”) of pre104 had been translated as “unemployed” which is false. Correct is “not in the labor force”.
2012-3-2Mistake in Study description (German)There is a mistake in a table on page 12 of the study description. Below the point “Alter*Bildung” the age group is stated to be “16 bis unter 30 Jahre“ (“16 up to (but excluding) 30 years”) which is false. Correct is “18 bis unter 30 Jahre" (“18 up to (but excluding) 30 years”).

Changes in this version
2011-10-21Newly computed weights have been added to the data set. For more information see the weighting section in the study description. --
2011-10-21From now on there will be a questionnaire documentation for the rolling cross-section election campaign study (Rolling Cross-Section-Wahlkampfstudie) with post-election panel wave (Nachwahl-Panelwelle) including both the questions before the election and the questions after the election. So far, there had been 2 questionnaire documentations on this component. In addition, the codes of the questionnaire documentation have been adjusted to the data set.--
2011-10-21Two subsequently coded variables (pos003c, pos004c) have been removed from the data set and replaced by the respective original variables. These contain inconsistencies which could not be corrected during data preparation.--
2011-10-21--
2011-10-21The coding of variable pre123 “Religionszugehörigkeit (“religious denomination”) has been undertaken according to a newly created, all components of GLES unifying coding scheme. The coding scheme is available on the internet pages of GLES by GESIS.--
2011-10-21Adjustments of some variable labels made for reasons of simplification and comprehensibility.--
Version 4.0.02011-8-11 Pre-Release4-0-0 doi:10.4232/1.10767
Changes in this version
2011-8-11There was a mistake in variable pre042m1 (“Parteien-Bias Tageszeitung: 1. Nennung”, “party bias daily newspaper: 1st mentioned”). One respondent had stated to not read newspapers (pre040=8) but had valid values in the follow-up questions (pre042_1=1 and pre042m1=1). This case has been subsequently recoded to “trifft nicht zu” (“not applicable”) regarding pre042_1 and pre042m1 (corresponding codes are 100 and 1000, respectively). --
2011-8-11Previous recoding of year of birth into a lower bound category “1929 and before” has been revised. Values of respondents with year of birth before 1929 are now available.--
2011-8-11In the course of the unification of GLES data sets code 0 TNZ (“not applicable”) has been recoded to code 100/1000 or, respectively, 102/1002 “did not participate”. Codes 8 “weiß nicht” (“don’t know”) and 9 “keine Angaben” (“not specified”) have been recoded to 98 and 99, respectively. These changes concern all variables.--
2011-8-11The previous code 0 “nicht genannt/TNZ” (“not mentioned/not applicable”) of all questions where multiple answers are possible (pre013, pre038, pre042, pre046, pre048, pre050, pre052, pre054, pre056, pre058, pre085, pre086, pos010, pos035–pos038) has been split into code 0 (“not mentioned”), code 100 (“not applicable”) and code 102 (“did not participate”), respectively.--
2011-8-11In the variables for response-latency-measures there were 19 time measures which were coded validly in pre003_t but contained system missings in pre003_rl. This problem re-occurred with all response-latency measurements. Cases with missing values due to filtering have been recoded to 10000 (_rl) and 100 (_t) “trifft nicht zu“ (“not applicable”) , respectively. Cases with missing values due to other reasons have been recoded to 9999 (_rl) “keine Zeitmessung“ (“no time measure”) and 2 (_t) “nein, Zeitmessung nicht gültig" (“no, time measure invalid”), respectively. --
2011-8-11Adjustment of coding to coding scheme “Parteienliste” (“list of parties”) made regarding all variables asking about political parties. The coding scheme is available for download.--
2011-8-11Adjustments of some variable labels made for reasons of simplification and comprehensibility.--
2011-8-11Value labels of pre031_a-f (“Skalometer Politiker: ...”, “scalometer of politician”), pos028 (“Angst Wirtschaftskrise”, “fear of economic crisis”) and pos050_a-f (“Need-Batterie: …”, “need battery”) have been added accordingly to the respective codes. Value label of code 801 (previously: 10) has been corrected to “other party” (previously: “to another party”). The value labels of pos054 (“Dauer der Arbeitslosigkeit”, “duration of unemployment”) now include information on years.--
2011-8-11Subsequent creation of variables pos003c (“Recall BTW 2009: Erststimme (recodiert)”) and pos004c (“Recall BTW 2009: Zweitstimme (recodiert)”) based on variables pos003 and pos004. The original variables pos003 and pos004 did no longer contain additional information and have been deleted.--
2011-8-11In variable pre091 (“Ueberhangmandate, subjektives Wissen“, “overhang mandates, subjective knowledge“) and pos091 (“Rezeption TV Total Bundestagswahl 2009“, “reception of TV Total Bundestagswahl 2009“) there were 5367, respectively, 55 cases coded with TNZ (“not applicable”), although there was no filter. These respondents did not receive the question because it was only implemented in the course of the first day of the post-election survey wave. Accordingly, code 100 has been labeled “trifft nicht zu (Frage nicht bekommen)” (“not applicable (did not receive question)“).--
Version 3.1.02010-10-27 Pre-Release2.1 doi:10.4232/1.10360
Changes in this version
2010-10-27Special characters from the German language (Umlaute) have been removed from all value labels.--
2010-10-27Variable labels regarding pre085_1-9 "Wahlkampf: Parteienwerbung" (“election campaign: party campaign“) and pre086_1-9 "Wahlkampf: Direkter Wahlkampfkontakt" (“election campaign: direct contact election campaign“) were partly assigned erroneously. The mistake has been corrected. A detailed listing of all labels that were assigned erroneously can be found in the amendment file which comes along with the data set.--
Version 3.0.02010-9-30 Pre-Release2.0 doi:10.4232/1.10359
Changes in this version
2010-9-30The variables regarding the most important and second most important problem in Germany were added to the data set (variables: pre014c1, pre014c2, pre014c3, pre014c4, pre014c5, pre016c1, pre016c2, pre016c3, pre016c4, pre016c5, pre016c6, pre016c7, pos012c1, pos012c2, pos012c3, pos012c4, pos012c5, pos014c1, pos014c2, pos014c3, pos014c4).--
2010-9-30Correction of filter flaw: respondents that did not make meaningful statements regarding the open question on the most important problem in Germany (variable: pre014) subsequently received the code 9999. Accordingly, these respondents received the value TNZ (“not applicable”) in the follow-up question regarding the second most important problem (variable: pre016). --
2010-9-30Correction of filter flaw: In the variables pre042_1 (“Parteien-Bias Tageszeitung: CDU/CSU“,“party bias daily newspaper: CDU/CSU“), pre050_7 (“Parteien-Bias TV-Nachrichten ARD: Nein, keine Partei”, “party bias TV news ARD: no, no party”) and pre052_7 (“Parteien-Bias TV-Nachrichten ZDF: Nein, keine Partei”, “party bias TV news ZDF: no, no party”) one respective case had a valid value although the respective questions should not have been asked according to specified filter conditions. The respective values have been set to 0 “nicht genannt / TNZ” (“not mentioned / not applicable”).--
2010-9-30Adjustment of the questionnaire: The initial filtering for variable pre047 (“Aufmerksamkeit Tageszeitungen”, “attention daily newspaper”) had been programmed deviating from the questionnaire. Question pre047 was asked if pre039 (“Nutzung Tageszeitung”, “usage of daily newspaper”) received a value between one and seven. The questionnaire has been revised subsequently. --
2010-9-30Variable pre090 (“Afghanistan: Nahestehende Partei“, “Afghanistan, related party“) received system missings. The correct value would have been “TNZ” (“not applicable”). The mistake has been corrected. --
2010-9-30Filtering instructions for variable pre115 (“Angst Stellenverlust”, “fear of losing job”) were incomplete in the questionnaire. An additional filtering condition has been complemented (pre105 (Beruf) = 1,2,8,9).--
2010-9-30Variable name pos089 occurred twice in the questionnaire. The respective variable in the data set had received the name pos090. The questionnaire has been revised subsequently in an according manner: pos089 (“Afghanistan: Position Ego”), pos090 (“Afghanistan: Nahestehende Partei“, “Afghanistan, related party“).--
2010-9-30Correction of value labels and variable labels--

  • German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES)
The German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) is a DFG-funded project which made its debut just prior to the 2009 federal election. GLES is the largest and most ambitious election study held so far in Germany. Although the initial mandate is to examine and analyse the electorate for three consecutive elections, the aspired goal is to integrate the project within GESIS as an institutionalized election study after the federal election of 2017, and hence to make it a permanent study.
