2013-12-19Split positional issues (kpx_1070 through kpx_1483) in wave 1 to 7: The transfer of the information regarding the split group a respondent was in in wave 1 did not work properly and is partially incorrect in waves 2 to 7, so that some respondents – contrary to the intended procedure – rated certain items both on 7-point as well as on 11-point scales.
2013-12-19Split Televised debate in waves 4 and 5: The transfer of the split information from wave 4 to 5 did not work correctly. As a result, the experiment on the effects of questions on the televised debate on the respondents´ reception of the televised debate failed.
2013-12-19kpx_1970 First discussion partner, voting decision: The response option "is not eligible to vote" has been offered to the respondents since wave 3.
2013-12-19kpx_1970 First discussion partner, voting decision: The skip pattern for the question kpx_1970 on the question kpx_1980b was programmed as intended by the questionnaire only in the waves 1 and 2. The skip pattern in the waves 3 to 7 deviates from the filter redirection instructions. Those respondents who gave "no answer" (99) to the question kpx_1970 did not receive the question kpx_1980b and were accordingly coded as "not applicable" (100) in waves 3 to 7.
2013-12-19kpx_1990 First discussion partner, party identification, party: The field institute wrongly put CDU and CSU in just one answer category, thus resulting in the inconsistency between question and coding. Waves 1 to 4 wrongly showed the answer category "no party" which was replaced by "don’t know" as of wave 5.
2013-12-19kp1_650d Scalometer politicians: Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg: No valid values have been saved due to a programming error.
2013-12-19kp1_1070a_11 Political positions (11): Socio-economic dimension, parties: CDU: The answers (1) "lower taxes and less government spending on welfare state benefits" given at kp1_1070a Political positions (11) Socio-economic dimension, parties, CDU were all mistakenly saved as (99) "no answer". This error could not be fixed.
2013-12-19kp1_2370 Duration of unemployment: The field institute failed to program the filter redirection to kpx_2340.
2013-12-19kp1_2391 School leaving certificate partner: The filter redirection to this variable did not work correctly. As a result, five respondents mistakenly skipped the question. This error could not be fixed.
2013-12-19kp1_2400 Gainful employment partner: The filter redirection to this variable did not work correctly. As a result, five respondents mistakenly skipped the question. This error could not be fixed.
2013-12-19kp2_250as, kp2_250as_c, kp2_250bs, kp2_250bs_c Reasons for decision not to vote, closed: These variables are missing in the dataset.
2013-12-19kp2_420j_6s(_c) Contact with political parties, way, party: These variables are missing in the dataset because there have not been any entries for other parties in this question.
2013-12-19kp2_730 Scalometer government: This question has not been asked due to a programming error and, thus, is missing in the dataset.
2013-12-19kp2_1990 First discussion partner, party identification, party: The filter redirection to this variable was implemented incorrectly. This error could not be fixed.
2013-12-19kp2_2470 Membership of trade unions, household: The field institute failed to program the answer "don’t know" as originally designed.
2013-12-19kp2_2480 Religion: 15 respondents who answered (7) "other" had no data in the corresponding string variable. Their responses could not be reconstructed.
2013-12-19kp3_split Split 7/11-scale in wave 3: One respondent has a missing value on this variable although he participated in wave 3. Hence, this respondent has not been assigned to a split.
2013-12-19kp3_420j_6s(_c) Contact with political parties, way, party: These variables are missing in the dataset because there have not been any entries for other parties in this question.
2013-12-19kp3_1990 First discussion partner, party identification, party: Seven respondents have been coded as (100) "not applicable" by mistake. This error could not be fixed.
2013-12-19kp3_2060 Second discussion partner, party identification, party: Mistakenly, the parties CDU and CSU were put in just one answer category.
2013-12-19kp3_2330s_c Vocational and professional training: This variable is missing in the dataset.
2013-12-19kp3_2370 Duration of unemployment: The field institute failed to program the filter redirection to kpx_2340.

2015-3-26Variablename k7_400 was wrong and has been renamed into kp7_401.2015-3-26
Version 4.0.02013-9-18 Release4-0-0 doi:10.4232/1.11766
Changes in this version
2013-12-19All party codes were adjusted to the standardized code scheme used by GLES. This applies to all items which ask for parties except those which allow for multiple choices. At the same time, wrong or unspecific codification of open answers were corrected. The items are: kpx_190a-b „Voting intention“, kpx_191a-b „Vote postal voter“, kpx_200a-b „Federal election first/second vote“, kpx_210 „Vote (hypothetical)“, kpx_230 „Which party was alternatively eligible?“, kpx_290a-b „Voting decision (hypothetical)“, kpx_310 „Which party is ineligible“, kpx_350a-b „Recall previous federal election“, kpx_360 „Recall European elections“, kpx_370 „Recall election to the Landtag“, kpx_420a-k „Contact with political parties, way, party“, kpx_850 „Ability to solve the most important issue“, kpx_870 „Ability to solve the second most important political“, kpx_890 „Ability to solve the thrid most important political“, kpx_920 „Desirable coalition“, kpx_960 „Expected coalition“, kpx_1061a-f „Coalition vignettes“, kpx_1970 „First discussion partner, voting“, kpx_1990 „First discussion partner, party“, kpx_2040 „Second discussion partner, voting“, kpx_2060 „Second discussion partner, party“, kpx_2090 „Party identification“, kpx_2130 „Party identification father“, kpx_2140 „Party identification mother“ kpx_2460s_c „Membership of organizations, party encoded“. 2013-12-19
2013-12-19Due to recodes and corrections in the first step mentioned above value labels and certain filter condtions had to be adjusted as well. Those are: kp2_190(a) „Voting intention“, kpx_220 „Alternatively eligible party“, kpx_220a-f „Alternatively eligible party to...“, kpx_260b „Reasons for voting decision, open“, kpx_270 „Certainty of voting decision“, kpx_320 „Time of voting decision“, kpx_1980a-b „First discussion partner, party“, kpx_2100 „Party identification, strength“, kpx_2110 „Party identification, persistence“ sowie kpx_2050a-b „Second discussion partner, party“.2013-12-19
2013-12-19Codes of kpx_2601 "Federal State" were adjusted to the standardized GLES scheme "Federal State". Dataset contains the variable fedstate only (also see Technical Report). 2013-12-19
2013-12-1934 Variable were corrected because they had been named incorrectly by the field institute. If necessary, variable labels were corrected as well.2013-12-19
2013-12-19A few participants did not fill in anything in the open text fields. These missing entries had been overlooked in particular cases when they were encoded so that some cases got wrong codes. Affected variables are kp5_840 "Most important issue" (3x), kp6_840 (1x) and kp7_260a "Reasons for voting decision, open" (2x). Because of further questions filtered by the answers to kpx_840, kpx_850 "Ability to solve the most important issue", kpx_860 "Second most important issue", kpx_870 "Ability to solve the second most important issue", kpx_880 "Third most important issue" and kpx_890 "Ability to solve the third most important issue" were recoded.2013-12-19
2013-12-19Two wrong codifications due to typing errors had been found in kp1_260_c3 "Reasons for voting decision, open (3. codification) and kp1_860_c3 "Second most important issue" and were recoded into the intended 216 and 3872. 2013-12-19
2013-12-19Due to programm errors by the field institute there were a lot of answers which had been saved wrong by the software. Now, four more variables have been identified having the same problem. This are kp4_450 "Government, differences", kp4_460 "Parties, differences", kp4_730 "Scalometer government" and kp4_2720 "Economic crisis, satisfaction". All values in this variables were recoded into -1.2013-12-19
2013-12-19Several particpants had been identified to have changing sociodemografic characteristics ("Panel mutants"). In a few cases those particapants had been deleted because they were expected not to be the original one. For kp5_1990 "First discussion partner, party" and kp5_1061a "Coalition vignettes" the deletion seemed to fail because they showed more oberservations than other variables. Finally, these remaining informations were deleted, too.2013-12-19
2013-12-19kp5_1601a-f "Coalition vignettes" lacked a "version B" which breaks the code "other parties" down into furter ones. Version 4.0.0 does now contain this variable.2013-12-19
2013-12-19Although participants named until six different parties only three entries had been recoded into "other parties". Furthermore there had been a lot of inconsistencies and wrong codifications. Thus, all encodings were checked carefully and a fourth, fifth or sixth code were added if necessary. The Variables are: kp6_420d „Contact with political parties, way: I saw party or candidate broadcasts on {television}, party“, kp6_420e „Contact with political parties, way: I listened to canvassing on the {radio}, party“, kp6_420g_6s_c4 „Contact with political parties, way: I saw {campaign posters}, party“, kp7_420d „Contact with political parties, way: I saw party or candidate broadcasts on {television}, party““ und kp7_420e „Contact with political parties, way: I listened to canvassing on the {radio}, party", kp7_420g „Contact with political parties, way: I saw {campaign posters}, party“2013-12-19
2013-12-19For kp6_310 „Which party is ineligible“ 187 (6,74%) wrong codifications have been found. Furthermore, only until three entries had been encoded. Thus, all encodings were checked carefully and fourth, fifth or sixth codifications were added if necessary. 2013-12-19
2013-12-19There had been information about response time in the seventh wave of participants which did not attend this wave (e.g Panel mutants). Those values were deleted (t7_start - t_kp7_147)2013-12-19
2013-12-19A rash of little errors in variable and value labels were corrected.2013-12-19
2013-12-19Open replies by participants to questions concerning the most, second most and third most issue (kpx_840, kpx_860, kpx_880), the reason for decision not to vote (kpx_240), the reason for voting decision (kpx_260a-b)and the good and bad aspects of Merkel and Steinmeier (kpx_690, kpx_700, kpx_710, kpx_720) were checked for sensitive personal data and if existing being overwritten to protect particpants against identification.2013-12-19
2013-12-19To ensure that all statistic programms in all countries can use the datasets, several corrections were done: Mutated vowels in variable and value labels ("ä", "ö", "ü", "ß") were changed into "ae", "oe", "ue" and "ss". All variable labels were cut by 80 characters and all value labely by 120 charcters. Nevertheless, it was taken care that the contents keep being understandable. The whole labels can still be read in the questionaire. 2013-12-19
Version 3.0.02012-1-24 Pre-Release3-0-0 doi:10.4232/1.11131
Changes in this version
2012-1-2468 new cross-sectional and panel weights have been added to the data set. A detailed desription of all weights and their design can be found in the study description.--
2012-1-24Answer categories “Jewish”, “Islamic” and “others” of variable KP2_2480 (“religious denomination”) have been subsumed into “other denomination”. Other statements have been recoded according to the “religious denomination” (“Religionszugehörigkeit”) coding scheme.--
2012-1-24The variables KP2_2490 (“church attendance, Christian”, “Kirchgangshäufigkeit, christlich”), KP2_2500 (“synagogue attendance, Jewish”, “Kirchgangshäufigkeit, jüdisch”) and KP2_2510 (“mosque attendance, Islamic”, “Kirchgangshäufigkeit, islamisch”) have been subsumed into the variable dkirchg “Church/mosque/synagogue attendance” (“Haeufigkeit Besuch Kirche/ Moschee/Synagoge”). --
2012-1-24Statements to the questions KP2_2540 (“country of birth”), KP2_2560 (“country of birth, partner”), KP2_2570a (“country of birth, mother”) and KP2_2570b (“country of birth, father”) have been recoded according to the unified “country” (“Staaten”) coding scheme. --
2012-1-24There had been inconsistencies in previous versions of the data set between the information on the electoral district and the federal state of a small number of respondents. With version 3.0.0 the respondents’ statements regarding place of residence and electoral district have been tested strictly and corrected where possible. The data set contains the federal state of respondents in variable fedstate (“Federal State”), the electoral district in elecdist (“Definite number of electoral district”) as well as variables elecdist1-12 (“Not definite number of electoral district: 1.[-12.] possible electoral district”). A detailed description of the way of proceeding is to be found in the study description. --
2012-1-24The values of the variables KP1_650d, KP1_1070a_11, KP4_660, KP4_740a-c, KP4_750a-c, KP4_1080a_7, KP4_1090_7, KP4_1130_7, KP4_1370_7, KP4_1350a_7, KP4_1350a_11, KP4_1090_11, KP4_1130_11, KP4_1370_11, KP4_1510a-f have been saved erroneously due to coding problems. Therefore, all values of the respective variables have been recoded to -1. With version 3.0.0 all original variables with the erroneous values have been added to the end of the data set with the appendix “_org” in their names. Working with these variables is on one’s own responsibility.--

  • German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES)
The German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) is a DFG-funded project which made its debut just prior to the 2009 federal election. GLES is the largest and most ambitious election study held so far in Germany.
