Abstract | Since the early 1970s the European Commission´s Standard & Special Eurobarometer are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries. Principal investigators are the Directorate-General Communication and on occasion other departments of the European Commission or the European Parliament. Over time, candidate and accession countries were included in the Standard Eurobarometer Series. Selected questions or modules may not have been surveyed in each sample. Please consult the basic questionnaire for more information on country filter instructions or other questionnaire routing filters. In this study the following modules are included: 1. Climate change, 2. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), 3. Labelling of dairy products and meat, 4. Healthcare quality, 5. Sport and physical activity. Topics: 1. Climate change: most important problems facing the world as a whole at the moment; assessment of the seriousness of the problem of climate change; responsible bodies for tackling climate change: national governments, European Union, regional and local authorities, business and industry, citizens, environmental groups; attitude towards the following statements: fighting climate change and more efficient use of energy can boost economy and jobs in the EU, reducing fossil fuel imports from outside the EU could benefit the EU economically; personal actions taken in the last six months to fight climate change and kind of actions; importance of the national government setting targets to increase the amount of renewable energy by 2030; importance of the national government providing support for improving energy efficiency by 2030. 2. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP): future importance of the subject of agriculture and rural areas in the EU; knowledge test on EU agricultural issues: United States produces more agricultural products than the EU, incomes in the agricultural sector are lower than in other economic sectors, farmers represent around 10 % of the working population; awareness of the support given to farmers by the EU through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP); assessment of selected aspects of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) as a good thing: guaranteeing food supply for Europeans, developing rural areas in a balanced way, supporting farmers in a fairer and more targeted way, supporting young farmers, eco-friendly practices as a precondition for financial aid; main responsibilities of farmers in society; most important reasons for maintaining agriculture in all parts of the EU; importance of diversity in farming and food products in the EU member states; assessment of the amount of financial support from combined national public expenditure and from the EU budget to farmers as appropriate; assumed reasons for spending 40 % of EU budget on Common Agricultural Policy; Common Agricultural Policy benefits all EU citizens and not only farmers; importance to support farms against climate and economic hazards; preferred sources of information on agriculture and the EU’s agricultural and rural development policy. 3. Labelling of dairy products and meat: necessity of the ability to identify the place of origin of milk and dairy products; necessity to know the place of: milking, transforming milk into dairy products; preferred level of detail regarding the place of origin of milk: from inside or outside the EU, country, region; necessity of the ability to identify the place of origin of types of meat other than unprocessed prepacked meat; necessity to know where the animal was: born, raised, slaughtered; preferred level of detail regarding the place of origin of these types of meat: from inside or outside the EU, country, region; willingness to pay between one and two percent more to get this information; most important factors when buying milk and dairy products or other types of meat: quality, price, geographic origin, brand; awareness of selected logos. 4. Healthcare quality: most important criteria for high quality healthcare in the own country; evaluation of the quality of the national healthcare; assessment of the national healthcare quality compared to other EU member states; preferred sources of information on healthcare quality; most useful information to assess hospital quality; assessment of the likelihood to get harmed by hospital care in the own country; assessment of the likelihood to get harmed by non-hospital healthcare in the own country; personal experience with adverse events or in the family; place where the adverse event took place: in the own country, in another EU member state, in a country outside the EU; reporting of the event and authority reported to: hospital management, regional or local authorities, national agency on patient safety, lawyer, ministry of health, patient or consumer organisations or other NGOs, acquaintance who is working in the healthcare system, medical personnel, own country’s embassy or consulate; place of reporting: own country, another EU member state, country outside the EU; consequences of the reporting: apology from medical personnel, explanation by the healthcare facility, healthcare facility took measures to prevent similar errors in the future, financial compensation, responsible person was disciplined, actions against healthcare facility, refusal of liability by healthcare facility, legal proceedings still underway, no consequences; undergoing of surgical procedure within the last three years of respondent himself or of a family member; frequency of signing a written consent beforehand; hospitalization or admittance to long-term care facility of respondent himself or of a family member in the last twelve months; reception of information on healthcare-associated infection risks; type of information; knowledge of the authorities responsible for patient safety in the own country; knowledge of the forms of redress in case of being harmed by adverse events in the own country or in another EU member state; points of help in cases of redress in the own country: hospital management, regional or local authorities, national agency on patient safety, lawyer, ministry of health, patient or consumer organisations or other NGOs, acquaintance who is working in the healthcare system, medical personnel; points of help in cases of redress in another EU member state: hospital management in the country of care, medical personnel in the country of care, own country’s embassy or consulate in the country of care, national agency on patient safety in the own country, ministry of health in the own country, lawyer in the own country or in the country of care. 5. Sport and physical activity: frequency of sport activities; frequency of physical activities for non-sport reasons; number of days with vigorous physical activity in the last week; average time spent on these activities; number of days with moderate physical activity in the last week; average time spent on these activities; frequency of walking at least ten minutes at a time in the last week; average time of walking; time spent sitting on a usual day; place where engaging in sport or in other physical activities; reasons for engaging in sport or other physical activities; main reasons that prevent from practising sport regularly; membership in the following kind of clubs where participating in sport or recreational physical activity: health or fitness centre, sports club, socio-cultural club; approval of selected statements regarding physical activity: respondent’s residential area offers many opportunities, local sports clubs or other providers offer many opportunities, local authority does not do enough for citizens; personal engagement in voluntary work to support sporting activities; time spent per month on these activities; type of voluntary work: board or committee member, administration, coach or trainer, referee or other official, organisation of sporting events, support of day to day club activities, provision of transport, maintenance of sports facilities or sports equipment. Demography: nationality; marital status; age at end of education; sex; age; occupation; professional position; type of community; household composition and household size; possession of durable goods (entertainment electronics, internet connection, possession of a car, a flat/a house have finished paying for or still paying for); financial difficulties during the last year; internet use (at home, at work, at school); self-reported belonging to the working class, the middle class or the upper class of society; life satisfaction; frequency of discussions about political matters on national, European, and local level; own voice counts in the own country and in the EU; general direction things are going in the own country and in the EU. Additionally coded was: respondent ID; country; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; number of persons present during the interview; respondent cooperation; size of locality; region; language of the interview; nation group; weighting factor. |
